Volunteering: the process
Volunteering while on benefits
1.Complete an Application Form.
2.Attend an informal interview with a support worker.
3.A Criminal Records Background check will be required – we will not take minor offences into consideration dependant on the nature of the offence.
4.Two references will be required.
5.Discuss your preferences for which area of volunteering you are interested in and any training you would like to do which is relevant to the role.
6.Complete the induction process.
7.Complete a Personal Development Form with a Support Worker, which gives us a clear idea of what you want to achieve.
8.Training will be provided, for example, confidence and motivation, interview workshops etc.
9.You can attend regular coffee mornings and social events as you wish and this provides a good opportunity to meet other volunteers.
You are free to volunteer while you are receiving benefits as long as the work you do is unpaid, and you meet the rules of your benefit.
For more information and guidance on being a volunteer whilst claiming benefits, check the Directgov website.
Always check with your benefits adviser before you start volunteering.
If you are interested in volunteering within DOC, then please give us and we will put you in touch with one of our projects. You will be able to discuss the project and your background in a bit more detail, to ensure this is the right step for you.
